The Old Sacramento Living History Program is a volunteer organization whose goal is to educate, while entertaining, the public on the streets of Old Sacramento, California. This program will insure that Sacramento's heritage will be kept alive through the historical recreation of the individuals, events and activities of Sacramento's rich history during the time period of 1848 to 1870 with a heavy emphasis on the Gold Rush Era and the years 1848 to 1858.
The Old Sacramento Living History Program participates in and supports events in Old Sacramento. Most members adopt the roll of a specific Sacramento historical personality; while others provide background help and support.
As a member of the Old Sacramento Living History Program you will meet new friends and participate in a worthwhile endeavor. You can give of yourself to a cause you believe in. You will receive appreciation and respect for your commitment, professionalism, talent and integrity.
Becoming a member of this wonderful and exciting organization is simple process:
Volunteers are required to complete 18 hours of training. A series of workshops will be held on the following topics:
Volunteers are asked to give six (6) hours per month (averaged over three months). This may be accomplished through a combination of the following:
There are no due or fees the first year. You will have to provide your own costume, which can be as expensive or modest as your character requires.
You can buy, rent or make your costume. Costume help is provided by experienced members who share their knowledge of, and provide assistance with, costume research construction.
We require our costumed members to choose a historical character who lived in, or traveled through, Sacramento during the historical period we cover (1848 to 1870). A "generic" character such as a merchant, dressmaker, farmer, etc., is acceptable on a limited basis. We also expect reasonable authenticity.
We also accept non-costumed members for those who choose to work "behind-the-scenes" doing research, administrative support, etc.
We are constantly working to improve our program, and we keep your comments and questions in mind. If you have a question that is not answered in the above information, please feel free to contact us at janessa@oslhp.net. We will respond as quickly as possible.
