A small paper found inside reads "Great Grandmother Ramsell's sewing box" in an old penciled handwriting. A darling little original circa 1860's to 1880's Victorian lady's sewing box as found in eastern Pennsylvania. This 4 1/2" by 6" by 2 3/4" tall dark finished and varnished box has brass inlaid top plate, accent bands, and an escutcheon plate for the mortised in lock and iron key. The key does not fully throw the mechanism. The bottom is covered in an original dark stippled paper. The box opens on small brass hinges to reveal a pale yellow papered lining, a mirrored inner lid, and a lift out tray with a floral impressed ivory and a royal blue silk velvet top, having an ornate gimp border and four ivory ribbon sleeves that hold a brass thimble, lathe turned bone awl or stiletto, a steel scissors with a ribbon tie, and two different steel bodkins or threaders. The box and contents are in good sound condition, with minor scattered age flaws to both that include the gimp trim, and a few stained spots to the inner lining.
