Amethyst pendant/brooch, ca. 1850, with three oval amethysts of approx. 15 cts. EACH, claw- and collet-set in a open-backed framework of unmarked 15k gold. These natural amethysts are a beautiful shade of rich violet, and are matched for color. The frame t boasts elegant scrollwork in both matte and shiny textures, applied swirls and beadwork, and bright-cut engraving! 2 3/4" long x 2" wide, and weighs 16.6 grams! It retains its original "T" bar clasp, although the "C" part of the clasp has been replaced with an early 15k locking clasp ca. 1900. There is also a small loop at the top of the brooch which would also allow it to be worn as a pendant if a jump ring were to be added.

Etruscan Pietra Dura Pin 1860 18K
|
|
View More
Victorian 18K gold Etruscan revival and pietra dura pin. This piece was made in Italy between 1850 to 1875. The gold work has wonderful applied decorations, twisted wires and bead work, true to the ancient Etruscan style. Some of the twisted wires have come off over the years, but overall the condition is very good. The hinge is original but the pin back and clasp have certainly been replaced. There is a small amount of lead solder visible on the interior backside of the pin. The gold frame has some minor bends but no dents, no splits, no holes, no cracks and no other problems.
The stone work is quite unique. This is not typical pietra dura stone work and I am not sure it could even be called pietra dura. Traditional pietra dura work has a smooth surface. A group of stones are inlaid into a larger stone to create a design. In this particular piece the stones are all carved in a high three dimensional relief and are applied on top of the stone. The large black stone has been re- set and re-glued into this piece.
The dimensions of the gold frame are 2 1/4 inches or 57.5 mm by 1 7/8 inches or 48 mm. The stone measures 1 3/4 inches or 44 mm by 1 1/2 inches or 38 mm.
