Fairly early manufacture but probably converted from flintlock. The barrel is 11 ½" long and has a deeply etched, very bold Damascus pattern present. The barrel is round with a forged rib extending from 3" ahead of the breech to within 3/4" of the muzzle. Silver blade front sight is mounted on this shallow rib about 1 ½" behind the muzzle. Decorative forging is also present just ahead of the breech of the barrel. The bore is approximately .60 caliber and smooth. The breechplug tang is stepped just behind the single mounting screw and is engraved with a numeral "2." The stock is of walnut and is very finely made and in excellent condition. Relief carving is present around the breechplug tang in a floral motif and around the forward finial of the triggerguard and around the ramrod entry thimble. In addition, a molding is carved along the ramrod channel. The ramrod has a horn tip which matches the nicely made horn nosecap on the stock. Each thimble is octagon with a very nicely engraved tang on the ramrod entry thimble. Two sidelock screws are surrounded by ornately, deeply engraved brass escutcheons. Deeply executed engraving is also present on the triggerguard bow and on the tined buttcap. Furniture fits well in the stock. The lockplate is also deeply engraved as is the hammer. Lockplate does not show evidence of having been converted from flintlock and is probably manufactured for this gun at the time of conversion. Lockplate has a deeply beveled edge and is 4 ½" long. Lock will not stand in the full cock position. Unmarked as to the maker.
