OSLHP Newsletter - December 2003
December 2003
Happy Holidays!
Instead of Terry’s usual great newsletter you get my end of the year wrap up. Many things have happened to the program this year and as a whole the entire program is stronger. Andria may have left her position as director but she still maintains a presence in the group. I hope I am doing as good of a job. The OSLHP has 7 new members, welcome to everyone. Gold Rush Days and Ghost Tours were a success. We have our own checking account which gives us great control over our fundraising monies. Over all the group is moving ahead with new ideas and new people are taking greater responsibilities.
Also, I recently met with the new director of the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation, Steve Huffman. He has assured me that the program will continue with little interference and he will help the program expand. Steve expects the OSLHP to move to the Foundation in March.
This past November has been very difficult for me. As many of you know I unexpectedly went to Florida for a week to visit my Grandfather also Susan Goodrich’s father in the hospital. He quietly passed away in the hospital November 25. I will miss him greatly. Thanks to Terry Eargle and Liz Fairchild for taking over while I was gone. Everything is going smoothly.
It has come to my attention that clarification is needed in regards to the situation about who has keys and the spring play. First the keys. After the break in before Gold Rush Days I was only given 3 keys in which to give members. I choose to give Terry Eargle a key because she is the vice President and represents the organization in my absence. Liz Fairchild was given a key because of her work with the storeroom. She needs access to the facility when I can ‘t be here. The third key I keep to give to people whom are either chairing and event or holding a meeting. This is a key that is checked and returned as needed. I can not give out keys to all members of the executive council because I simply do not have them and it is for the protection of all members that as few keys as possible be given out so that no one can be suspected of theft.
Now for the play. Many things have been said about the play. There originally was a different proposal for the play in which the RR Museum had greater participation making the project a joint project. The RR Museum opted not to participate, but we are still able to do the play. It is unfortunate that instead of asking me directly many people are under the impression that the grant money from the Sacramento Metro Arts Commission was based solely on the participation by the RR Museum. This is not true. The final grant was written so that if the RR Museum did not participate we would still do the play I am not lying or mismanaging the money in anyway. Anyone is welcome to read the grant and I have also been given approval by the Arts Commission for all changes just in case. This grant was an excellent opportunity for the OSLHP to receive recognition as a performing arts program. The $800 grant will defray approximately 45% of the expect cost of the production. I still anticipate breaking. I really don’t think it matters whether we have 15 or 150 people because the many members who want to do this theater will participate and those who do not like it won’t participate. Either way it is a great experience for the group to showcase the great talent of the many members.
As far as my participation with the group. I cannot and will not be able to attend every meeting or event the OSLHP puts on. I will make every effort to do so, but my 20 hours a week is not enough and I have my own family commitments as well. I also have certain priorities to the OSLHP to make it run smoothly preventing me from attending every meeting. I trust the many members to coordinate and plan the many events and meetings and afterwards I am always informed of decisions and needs. As always if you are having a problem with my handling of an issue/event please contact me directly to resolve the problem.
I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.
Amy
