OSLHP Newsletter - March 2004
President’s Message
Looking at our calendar we have a lot of activities. The Play went really well. If did not come you missed members of the program at their finest. The play had 153 ticketed people in the audience and made $1,163.30 in proceeds. It made a small profit of $100 but the real profit was in the happiness and hard work of everyone involved and reaching many new people.
I had the first planning meeting for Gold Rush Days and it looks as if most of it will be the same as last year, hours will go back to 10am to 5pm. There is already discussion about not hiring the same gun fighter groups back because of safety concerns.
General Meeting
The next general meeting is Wednesday, March 13 from 10 am to 12 pm at the Living History Center.
Executive Council Meeting
The next executive council meeting is March 9 at 7 pm. LaMona Hoover, has taken over for Virginia Perkins who took over for Liz Fairchild.
Volunteer Recognition
This month’s recognition has to go again to the staff, crew and members of the program who volunteered their time to make the play such a success. Many thanks to Ken for his organization of the training program which begins March 13 and his many helpers Jan Bullard, Terry Eargle and Terry Nelson.
Past Events
Love and Passion in the Gold Fields
Please see separate sheet for review and statistics on the play.
Free Museum Day
Members of the Living History Program were on hand at the Towe Auto Museum to promote the program, play and interact with the public. We passed out over 1000 flyers this day alone. By changing venues this year from the usual Discovery Museum I think it gave us an opportunity to meet people who don’t know about the program and a network of assistance with the Towe Auto Museum.
After School Program
The kids are slowly losing interest. I think an evaluation of the program would be not to do such a long program and to break it up. The kids are now learning how to sew and are beginning to write their play to be performed the beginning of May.
Coming Events
Walking Tours
They are happening. Beginning March 6 at 10 OSLHP will be giving tours to the public. Currently the tours will run every Saturday and Sunday at 10 am through Labor Day. Costumed volunteers are needed to guide the tours, 70% of proceeds go back to the Living History Program. The tours will replace the strolls starting in April. Scripts are available and you will be given a bound script on 3 x 5 cards to carry during the tour. It looks as if the OSLHP will be able to pay a stipend to tour guides.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Finally! Wednesday, March 17. We need to arrive by 5:30 pm at Lot W behind the Railroad museum. I am working on getting us free carriage rides with the Convention Bureau. Please sign up immediately by contacting Amy.
Women’s History Day
March 27th 11 am to 3:30 pm. Mary Carlson is working hard on planning the event. Times are 11:30 to 3:30. We could still use a temperance speech for or against. We will not be having a fashion show this year. The event takes place in and in front of the Visitor’s Center 1104 Second Street.
New Member Training
Orientation will kick off the series of classes on March 13th, after the General membership meeting. The first class begins the following Saturday, March 20, and the classes will continue until June 26th, with some Saturdays off for special events. Attendance at each class is not mandatory, but you will not want to miss any of our exciting series of classes!
Ken Knott, Class Coordinator.
Easter Bonnet Promenade
April 10th. Shelley Green and Mark Hobbs are co-chairing the event with Amy. To volunteer for the Promenade or help with the egg decorating please contact any of the people before hand.
Bus Trip to Filloli
A bus trip is tentatively being scheduled in the spring or summer to go to the Filloli Mansion and Gardens. Sue Rembolt is gathering some preliminary information but a chairperson or 2 co-chair people are needed. Contact Amy at 264-8142 if you are interested in helping to organize this trip.
Who Are We?
If you have not appeared in this section, please write your story (350 words) and contact Terry Nelson so we can check if we have a picture of your character. If we don’t, we will be sure to get one. We would love to have characterizations and pictures of all our members. They are a great recruiting tool. If I haven’t called upon you yet, be sure I will.
