OSLHP Newsletter - May 2004
President’s Message
The time is passing quickly. It has been easy changing from 20 to 30 hours a week, still so much to do as always. April passed without much incident.
I had a good vacation with my family at the Grand Canyon. It was scary to watch a 2-year-old near such a deep drop but we managed.
I also saw a shoot-out on the way home in Oatman, Arizona. The Blue Canyon Gang does not have to worry about the competition from these guys! The only wild things in Oatman are the semi-wild, hand-fed burrows that wander the streets. All the merchants sold carrots for tourists to buy, which my sons would have none of, either being too old for such things or too scared of the burrow.

Nominations
The nominating committee has recommended the following slate of officers for the 2004/2005 year:
The committee appreciates everyone’s interest this year, as a reminder for next year to be considered for an office a person must be a member for 1 year prior to the election.
The election will be held at the May 8th general meeting. The above slate is not the final say for voting, a member may be nominated from the floor prior to voting for consideration on the ballot.
Volunteer Recognition
Sooo many people to thank for their participation this month.
If I missed anyone, I am sorry, please accept my gratitude for everything that has been done on behalf of the OSLHP.
PAST EVENTS
Easter Bonnet Promenade
The Bonnet Promenade was a success as always. All the ladies looked lovely in their Easter frocks and bonnets, the gentlemen were dashing in their finery. The Promenade started at the Discovery Museum, wound around the streets of Old Sacramento, and ended at the Waterfront Park where Shelly Green and Mark Hobbs had done a marvelous job of planning the fun events for the children of all ages.
The children decorated eggs with all sorts of different items donated by various members, there were also spoon and egg races for the children, and the games were finally finished with a raw egg toss for the adults. This was so popular, we were asked to hold another race. Prizes were awarded to the winners and fun was had by all.
Thanks to Ray Closs, Elyse Bagley, Mel & Dorothy Picanco, Ray Eargle (with no voice), Jason Hollingsworth, and Penny Adams who helped with the judging and races.

The 2004 Easter Promenade and Activities In Review
The "Walk of Death" (as I have heard the Promenade referred to) claimed no members and had a goodly number of beautifully costumed OSLHP members as well as several ladies from the Red Hat Society…
We had plenty of supplies (with a few things left over for next year), four GREAT girl scouts to help oversee the egg decorating tables, and I am fairly certain we stayed under budget...
WHAT MORE COULD WE ASK FOR? (Maybe a few more members next to year to walk in the Promenade?)
A very special thank you to Mark, Jeff, Ken and Ray for hauling stuff and helping
with set-up, take-down, and the numerous errands that helped make the day (and
the heat) bearable. And, lest we forget our Fearless Leader - thank you
Amy!

ONGOING EVENTS
After School Program
The After School Program is winding down. The kids have begun rehearsing their play, and it will be performed May 26th at their school sometime between 4 and 5 p.m. during the Multicultural Faire. I will make a tape so that we can view the kids' hard work.
Walking Tours
Currently the tours will run every Saturday and Sunday at 10 am through Labor Day. Costumed volunteers are needed to guide the tours, 70% of proceeds go back to the Living History Program. The tours will replace the strolls starting in April. Scripts are available and you will be given a bound script on 3 x 5 cards to carry during the tour. The OSLHP will be able to pay a stipend to tour guides if requested. Call Amy, 916-264-8142 to sign up.
New Member Training
Our new members are now on the final stretch, and the classes will wind up on May 22nd with new members presenting the results of their own research. Current members are cordially invited to come and learn from our new members and congratulate them on graduating.
I would like to thank Jay Lawson, Amy Whitlatch, Jan Bullard, Penny Adams, Andria Quinnell, LaMona Hoover, Elyse Bagley, Terry Eargle, Mel Picanco, Terry Nelson, Terry Melau, Jason Hollingsworth, Jim Lundsten, and all those who have lent their support, for their wonderful assistance.
Our class curriculum was upgraded this year to include some new subjects which I hope will improve the level of accuracy and authenticity of our portrayals and events. The positive feedback I have received from our new members has been very gratifying, and the classes have been a rewarding experience for both students and teachers.
